Angel Beats!
June 18, 2010  |  Angel Beats!

Last week I had a terrible cold and could barely do anything other than watching anime. Just lying down is boring so I spent time marathoning angel beats episode 1 – 10.

It’s actually 4.32am right now and I usually slept at 12am but somehow today I couldn’t sleep. I wonder if it’s something I ate. Anyway episode 12 might have been out already yet I’ll jot down a bit about Angel Beats 1- 10.

[box type="blank" class="border-dashed2"][dropcap]I[/dropcap] came to know of this anime on tokyotosho top ten search keyword yet I never really had any intention downloading it since the name sounded like an ecchi F cup anime. I’m not really into big boobs and panty shot 24/7 anime.

My intention of downloading dropped even more after someone in forum mentioned that this anime is another Clannad version. I like Air TV but I hated Clannad . Why anyone would want to watch whiny immature story such as Clannad other than to fulfill their fetish of loli and seifuku interest. So I thought Angel Beats might be of same genre.[/box]

Yet somehow I read a synopsis of this anime. It’s about a guy who had amnesia and suddenly dropped in a battlefield against Angel in a world after death. The battlefront is lead by someone who is a lot like Suzumiya Haruhi . The word “battlefront” and “char like “Suzumiya Haruhi” got my interest and yes, my first impression of this anime hit way off of the radar. It is somewhat another version of a serious Haruhi Battlefront and even in their first episode, they were fighting over what name their battlefront team should be called. Ring a bell?

The so called haruhi character- named Yurippe does look like Haruhi except she had a different hair color and she actually listen to her comrade opinion and advices. The hero however, is Kyon in disguise.
[box type="blank" class="border-dashed2"]The hero urm what was his name again? Otonashi something… I don’t really remember hero names as I don’t really pay attention to guys char. As we know the protagonist – Otonashi –kun is awoke in afterlife high school where there he met with Yurippe, the leader of SSS battlefront. SSS battlefront motto is not to be exterminated or disappear from this world into something that they don’t know. Since there is no explanation as to why normal behave student disappearing, they thought that they might be reborn as a butterfly or cockroaches if they acted “good-like”. Yurippe on the other hand had a bigger aim; to battle God himself.[/box]

As Otonashi get to know people in this school, he found out that almost everyone here had cruel fate or rather dying unjustly. That would include himself which later explained in episode 9 if I recall. Like any other Japanese school, they have student council and in this world the student council is led by an Angel.

[box type="blank" class="border-dashed2"]When Otonashi first met Angel, he asked her to proof if this really is an afterworld. Angel then responded by stabbing him. People in this world don’t die, however they do feel pain like normal being. Angel, later known as Kanade Tachibana is not actually an angel. She fought SSS team because she wanted them to lead normal life and pass on. All this time they thought angel fought them just because they won’t obey and disappear.[/box]

The school contains 2000 students which most of them are NPCs. This according to Kanade, so that we the player would feel like living a normal life.

Other than SSS team, they also have guilds making weapons and ammunition supply. This guild however lies beneath underground and ways to get to guild is full of horrible death traps. Everything is made by memories in this world. If you have memory of making a tank, you could make them using dirt. I’d like to be in such world. All I need is YouTube and start making mass 3d version of Akiyama Mio for my own pleasure. Heh…

In one of SSS team mission to defeat and stop Angel, they manage to change Angel’s exam paper with mocking answer. This made the school drop Angel from student council. Otonoshi feels sorry for Angel and tries to get to know her better. After some time he figures out that Angel isn’t an enemy. Her actions are merely to help afterlife people have normal life in school, have fun, fulfill dreams and pass on. Except that she couldn’t communicate well with others and led to this whole misunderstanding.

Knowing that one would pass on if his/her dreams from life are fulfilled, Otonashi vow to help Angel. He first starts with Yui. Yui in her life before is paralyzed from neck down. All her life was spent on bed watching others do things she couldn’t do and due to that, most of her dreams are somewhat came from watching TV.

Her most important dream is to get married and this was fulfilled by Hinata. Yui passed on by Hinata words that he’d married her no matter what her condition were he’d find her and fall for her.
And that was the end of episode 10, where Yui were first to pass on with the help of Otonashi and Hinata and also Angel helping secretly in the background. In order to help everyone pass on, Otonashi told Angel to act as she was evil so that no one suspects what they are doing.

When I first hear Otonashi voice, I could easily realize who it was. It’s none other than Hiroshi Kamiya who voiced for almost every top anime since last few years . He voiced as Araragi in Bakemonogatari , Sensei in Zetsubou Sensei , Natsume in Natsume Yuujinchou and Recruit – Arakawa under the bridge.

Yes he did great job being seiyuu however when almost all of top anime lead is his voice, it gets kind of dull.
